If you use Twitter, whether you follow 5 people or 5000, it's helpful to learn to be more engaging. When you become a more engaging Twitter user, more people will want to follow you and communicate with you. This also makes it possible to find who you are following or that is following you whom you have things in common with or that you can benefit from.
Being more engaging will help you get more followers and also help you increase the quality of the followers you already have. One of the best ways to do this is to reply to other Tweeters. You don't have to be following a person to "@" them (unless they have a private timeline).
You can use hashtags (#) and Trending Topics to find what people are talking about and converse with people on these topics without following. Then if you meet someone you are conversational with, you can follow them or they may decide to follow you.
Another way to be more engaging on Twitter is to ask your followers questions that entice them to answer you. Some examples are:
· What's your earliest childhood memory?
· Do you know what your first word was?
· Do you have tattoos or body piercings?
· Should nudity be allowed on Twitter?
· How do you feel about the President?
· Is Canada superior to America?
You can ask any question you choose. If you're using Twitter to market, asking questions related to your niche or business is most helpful. Asking controversial questions is a great way to get attention and spark debate (but be ready to handle the backlash that could come). Personal or family related questions are a great way to get to know your followers better.
Pick random people from your Twitter stream and say hello each day. I go down my list and click to "@" people and one at a time (not mass at once), I message to say "hi", "How are you doing today", "Have a fun day!" or other greetings. Even business accounts should take time to be more engaging since this is really what Twitter is all about.
